Foster Care Project

Family is the most conducive environment for a child to grow and develop holistically, and Child Care Institutions should be considered only as a last resort when a child loses the support of their biological family. Keeping this in mind, Don Bosco Makkalalaya, Mysuru, began its Foster Care journey in 2020 in partnership with BOSCO to promote and provide family-based care for children in need of alternative support. Foster care refers to temporary family-based care for children who are orphaned, abandoned, or without adequate family support. The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015 recognizes foster care as an important alternative care option for children without biological families. As part of this initiative, Don Bosco Makkalalaya conducts training and awareness programmes for various stakeholders, including government officials, Gram Panchayat representatives, school teachers, Women Self Help Groups (SHGs), college students, Anganwadi teachers, mothers, helpers, ASHA workers, Child Care Institution heads, and the general public across Mysuru and Chamarajanagara districts. The project also supports prospective foster parents in applying through the District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) or Child Welfare Committee (CWC), followed by continuous follow-up and guidance. After a child is placed in a foster family, the foster care team regularly visits the family and school to ensure the child’s smooth integration and overall well-being.
