International Human Rights Day at Don Bosco Makkalalaya

Don Bosco Makkalalaya (DBM) celebrated International Human Rights Day, an occasion dedicated to promoting awareness about fundamental human rights and their significance in shaping a better world.

Fr. Siju Thomas, DBM’s Executive Director, provided a thought-provoking talk emphasising the essence of human rights, comprehending the meaning and importance of human rights in the prevention of wrongdoing, protection from harm, and their role in constructing a better future. He also reflected on the global theme of the International Human Rights Day: “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now.” and encouraged everyone to uphold and advocate for human rights, fostering a sense of responsibility among the youth to be agents of positive change.

Miss Gnanamani also conducted an enlightening seminar for the SSLC, PUC, and the 38th Batch Skill Training students on Human Rights and Child Rights. She bagan the session by tracing the origins of human rights and provided a detailed account of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 10, 1948 and explained how this historic document set the groundwork for ensuring basic rights and freedom for all individuals, irrespective of race, gender, nationality, or religion. The seminar delved into the definition of human rights, emphasising that human rights encompass civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights, including the right to life, freedom of speech, education, and equality before the law.

Miss Gnanamani also explained the topic of child rights, discussing their origin and evolution. The seminar highlighted the importance of child rights in ensuring that children can live free from abuse, neglect, and poverty, and grow into responsible, capable individuals.

The seminar was a thought-provoking and informative event, shedding light on the significance of human and child rights. The session was very informative to the students, providing them with a deeper understanding of the fundamental rights that all individuals, including children, are entitled to. Overall, the seminar served as a valuable educational opportunity for attendees to learn about the importance of advocating for and protecting human rights.
